Will this venture be A Little Bit of Heaven?
Whoopi Goldberg has taken to crowd-funding platform Kickstarter to help her with her directorial debut, I Got Somethin' To Tell You. Goldberg is hoping to raise $65,000 in order to tell the story of stand-up comedian Moms Mabley (born Loretta Mary Aiken). Mabley was one of Goldberg’s role models and rose to national recognition in the 1960s. She passed away in 1975 at the age of 81.
Goldberg paid tribute to Mabley in her Kickstarter pitch by saying, “Moms was the first and without her there probably would not have been a Totie, a Joan, a Kathy, a Wanda, or any of the others who may follow." She adds that, “there certainly would not have been a Whoopi.” The documentary will look at the comedy of Mabley, and define her significance through clips, old photographs, television show appearances and interviews.
Goldberg has said that she has financed a large part of this project, but has also put money towards the Sister Act show for Broadway. She is looking for some help to wrap up the project, rather than starting and stopping as she raises and spends money. If you are interested in the project, there are 28 more days to pledge with a variety of rewards for backers.Goldberg isn’t the first “celebrity” figure to take to Kickstarter to back a project, and certainly won’t be the last. The public are wary with their money though and won’t jump on absolutely any old project as recent statistics indicate.
