Loosly based on the graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, A History Of Violence is the latest film from Canadian auteur, David Cronenburg . Tom Stall is a loving family man and a well respected citizen of a small Indiana town. But when two savage criminals show up at his diner, Tom is forced to take action and thwart the robbery attempt. Suddenly heralded as a hero who took the courage to stand up to crime, people look up to Tom as a man of high moral regard. But all that media attention has the likes of mobsters showing up at his doorstep, charging that Tom is someone else they've been looking for. Is it a case of mistaken identity or does Tom have a history of violence that no one knows about?

3 out of 10 Worth a watch
Gerard from Tipperary, 21 Feb 2008
I had seen the trailers for this one on tv. Looked like an interesting movie. Viggo was good as the doting father and loving husband although maybe it was laid on a bit thick. Then the winds of change swept through the small town he lived in. Ed Harris was scary, man that eye was a good effect. I was more afraid of it than his character. The change that affected the family was interesting as the final scenes and ending. Altogether a thumbs up. The eye got the oscar from me !

4 out of 10 Tense, brilliant thriller
John from Dublin, 24 Feb 2008
Viggo Mortensen is surprisingly good as ordinary Tom Stall, who becomes a hero when he kills two men who hold up his small town diner. The resulting fame brings the attention of some serious city mobsters who believe Tom is really Joey Cusack, an old enemy of theirs who disappeared into hiding 20 years ago. The acting is subtle, the twists carefully structured and the sub-plot involving Tom's family relevant and sustained until the violence of the title finally explodes.

3.5 out of 10 A Cronenberg Cracker
Hazel from Dublin, 07 Jun 2007
A 'regular joe' (Viggo Mortensen) becomes an overnight hero while foiling the attempted robbery of his diner in a small town. His heroics attract some unwelcome attention to the sleepy town, seemingly unearthing things which are better left alone. This is not necessarily the kind of movie you would expect from David Cronenberg, but it is really very good indeed. The cast are excellent and the story is very good. Definitely worth a watch

4.5 out of 10 Excellent
Ciaran from Dublin, 17 May 2007
Viggo Mortensen plays a quiet cafe owner in a small town nowhere in particular in middle America. Up show a couple of nasty characters who are certainly 'not from round these here parts'. Who are they? What do they want? What dark secrets lie in the history of this quiet and unassuming cafe owner? Slow, tense thriller with a couple of outstanding scenes. Highly recommended.

0 out of 10 The worst/slowest half movie Ive ever seen
Larragh from Dublin, 10 Aug 2007
I dont know what effect they wanted with the slow silent style in this movie. It was boring, and the action was useless. Im not sure if the acting was awful, as the script couldnt have been easy to work with. By the end of the movie I was still waiting for something to happen!! Please please dont make the same mistake I did, and stay away from this waste of 2 hours!!!
