Though I have my reservations about Gibson they do not detract from the achievement of this movie. Thoroughly enjoyable and convincing to the point of feeling that you have been transported back to the time of this ancient civilisation. The ability to create dept of character in subject matters speaking an ancient langauge in a truly alien world is a master stroke.
This movie is not light viewing and is unquestionably gruesome at times but if you are in the mood for an epic flic, this is the 1
Courageous film-making.

You can't but admire Mel Gibson's nerve - he doesn't shirk his responsibilities when it comes to the themes of his movies. 'The Passion' is the starkest example but this is another worthy effort. Here he tackles the subject of the fall of the once-mighty Mayan empire. This is truly a stunning motion picture, visually impeccable and thematically challenging. However, I would warn people that those who like their movies easy to digest with simple plots may struggle to enjoy this.

If you're squeamish about blood and guts, don't bother seeing this. However, the story justifies it and just emphasizes the horror inflicted on the ordinary Mayans by their ruling class. The film gives a good perspective on what has been interpreted from artefacts to be the life of this society. The personal angle through the main character's experiences and (almost) original language used only enforces this. Very good film, Mel Gibson proves to be an interesting director.

This is a masterpiece. I couldn't fault it. It is all utterly convincing, with fabulous photography, and direction. The tension builds up and lasts right to the final frames, which themselves just beg to start another story. Ok, so it's got subtitles. Don't be scared, they won't bite. After five minutes you are so involved in the action that you are no longer aware of them. Oh, and watch the bonus feature about the making of this film. It's an entertainment in itself.

The first half of this movie made me think that Mel Gibson is really sick. It seemed like a lot of violence for no reason, but stick with it. Once you reach the second half of the movie it becomes inspiring all the more because you realize the horrors the hero is up against. The cinematography is spectacular, the jungle is beautiful and so vibrant that you feel that you are there. But if you are squeamish about violence you might want to give it a miss.
