3 out of 10 Just OK
Brian from Dublin, 21 Mar 2012
Expected something good from the director of Cinema Paradiso but this is a bit of a let down. Of course everything looks beautiful (the places, the people) and it has the obligatory coming of age stuff etc etc but it just feels disjointed. Just a series of scenes with no great connection or sympathetic characters. This, combined with the fact that its just too long, makes it boring and confusing. Seems like it could have been better if shortened and tightened up - without this, it looks like the director doing a bad imitation of himself. In the extras he says he was asked to an autobiographical film at too young an age - maybe he'll do a better one in 20 years...

3 out of 10 Long and not much of a story
Rory from Dublin, 11 Jul 2011
It's watchable but quite long. I found it quite rambling and without a point. Not the worst I've seen but not the best either.

What's it about....
Against the background of the Sicilian town Bagheria, simply called Baaria by its inhabitants, director Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso) unfolds a semi-autobiographical, mesmerising epic of life in Italy in the twentieth century. Following Peppino (Francesco Scianna) from his childhood in the 1930s, to his forbidden romance with the beautiful Mannina (Margareth Madè), political acent and fight against the mafia, Baaria is an emotional journey into the heart of Italy.
