3.5 out of 10 ANOTHER FLAWED MEISTERWERK FROM ARONOFSKY.
Brian from Kerry, 24 May 2011
A frail, obsessive ballerina is given her 'shot at the title'. But can she dance Tchaikovsky's Black Swan as well as she dances his White? Thus begins her journey into the heart of darkness. An occasionally superb study in hysteria, worthy of Hitchcock, but increasingly in danger of straying into M. Night Shyamalan territory. The blurring of reality and fantasy is crucial to the process, but Aronofsky over-uses it to a point that makes everything just too convenient for its own good. This is the man behind the Crystal Maze brilliance of Pi and the ringmasterly tearjerker The Wrestler. But he's also the brains behind the over-ambitious and under-achieving The Fountain. Black Swan is worth seeing, if only for the chills, but ultimately undeserving of the Oscar hype. Natalie Portman, however, is wonderful from beginning to end.

2 out of 10 Over-rated
Blanaid from Dublin, 05 Jun 2012
This movie seemed to get an awful lot of hype when it was released. People I knew seemed to be completely divided on whether it was good or not so I expected it to be a little better than it was. Maybe its just that I'm not into this kind of psychological drama but I thought that it was unsatisfying, it didn't bring you into the character (I was fairly indifferent about the central character). The music was quite good, and it does make me a little more interested in ballet but overall I would say - not for me!

4 out of 10 Good psychological thriller
Sebastien from Dublin, 19 Mar 2012
It's a good psychological thriller BUT they spoil it with too many hints at the beginning even though then they make up with fantastic interpretations by Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis and cameo roles by Wynona Ryder and Vincent Cassel. It's not what it looks like by watching the trailer. Photography is amazing. Natalie Portman is the movie itself, she really deserved that Oscar. Altogether a good movie. (PS my girlfriend found some scenes a little bit disturbing.)

2.5 out of 10 Don't watch it with your granny :-)
Denise from Sligo, 08 Jan 2013
I thought this would be more of a thriller, with stunning ballet scenes throughout.. but it was more juvenile/fantasy/etc) so I guess it wasn't what I expected. Watched it with an older family member and a bit embarrassed by some of the bedroom scenes (!) But it got good reviews at the time so maybe it's just me.

What's it about....
Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new...
