Moliere

1644, Paris, and 22-year-old Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, also known as Molière, is not yet the writer that history recognizes as the father and true master of comic satire, author of The Misanthrope and Tartuffe, and a dramatist to rank alongside Shakespeare and Sophocles. Far from it. He is, in fact, a failed actor. His Illustrious Theatre Troupe, founded the previous year, is bankrupt. Hounded by creditors, Molière is thrown into jail, released, then swiftly imprisoned again. When the jailors finally let him go, he disappears. The combined efforts of historians have unearthed no trace of him before his reappearance, several months later, when his troupe begins touring the provinces - a tour that will last for thirteen years, and culminate in Molière's triumphant return to Paris in 1658.

4 out of 10 Moliere
Christelle from Dublin, 14 Mar 2008
Very much in the spirit of 'Shakespeare in Love' with a French flavour... Entertaining without being too serious. Having studied Moliere at school like all French kids, I found this film surprisingly refreshing and enjoyable! Fabrice Luchini and Romain Duris playing 'the part of the horse' is hilarious...

4 out of 10 Great escapism
Maggie from Mayo, 08 Jul 2008
Lovely film, very Shakespeare In Love as others have said. Beautifully filmed, well acted and amusing. I suspect that it contains many "in" jokes from Moliere's works (as SIL did with Shakespeare) but I don't know them well enough to be sure. Worth a watch for sure and it's not just for the girls.

3.5 out of 10 Good film
Mark from Dublin, 28 Jun 2009
Its easy entertainment and if you not put off by subtitles you will enjoy this quirky little story a lot of people have likened it to shakespeare in Love and it is the same genre and I suppose without the stellar cast you could argue its a bit better for it.

Excellent! Really enjoyable. Sometimes you have to work to keep up with the subtitles and whats going on, but I thought this was fantastic. Quite like 'Shakespeare in Love'.
