Now that we’ve been posting DVDs to your door for over five years, we decided to do
a little bit of investigative work and find out who’s renting what. Does Dave from
Dublin have the same taste in film as Kev from Kilkenny? Here’s what we discovered.
Dubliners might be surprised to find that their most rented movie is Al Gore’s “An
Inconvenient Truth”. Maybe our capitals dwellers are growing a conscience about
our environmental impact. Dublin also rents more Oscar winning movies then any
other county with six out of ten of their most rented receiving the Academy Award.
However Oscars do not equal culture and perhaps not so astonishing is the fact
that there was no foreign language or art house movie, in any county’s most rented.
However Leitrim does appear slightly more sophisticated then the rest of us;
renting the highest percentage of World Cinema and Documentary.
Westmeath and Kilkenny are perhaps the most patriotic of us, renting more Irish movies
than any other county, while Longford has the only all American top ten. They are also
the only county to have “The 40 Year Old Virgin” in amongst their most rented; and
rent the lowest percentage of Romance movies per capita, which might make you believe
that Longford people are probably not the most amorous amongst us! It seems the south
of the country is missing a little sunshine with Cork, Kerry and Waterford all having
"Little Miss Sunshine" as their number one most viewed. While on the opposite end of
the country, Donegal is the biggest renter of Action movies in the country.
These lists are a result of five years of Screenclick renting, and represents the most
rented of all time from each individual country. Looking at the list it’s obvious we
are quite a serious bunch with only three comedy titles appearing in the top ten of
more then one county. These were Borat, Hot Fuzz and the of course the black comedy
Little Miss Sunshine. Laois it appears has the best sense of humour renting almost
one third more comedies per capita than any other county. Notably Kilkenny and
Mayo rent the least comedies. The majority of our most rented are more likely to
be a serious hard hitting blockbuster, with Babel appearing the record number of
times, featuring in twenty out of the twenty six counties’ top ten.
The latest blockbusters do not appear in this report as they would not have been out
long enough to compete against some of the heavy hitters. Screenclick believe in next
year’s review there will be more Irish titles with Garage and Once remaining in high demand,
and other titles bound to catch up are The Kite Runner and Juno – but whether or not
the counties’ individual tastes is set in stone or whether it will change with time
is yet to be seen.
